Swiss angle
Umbrel prices for Switzerland. The Umbrel Home page, opened from Switzerland on 4 October 2026, showed Umbrel Home from CHF 429 and Umbrel Pro from CHF 559, with free delivery to anywhere in Switzerland including all customs duties and taxes. You pay the price on the page, and no import bill arrives with the parcel.
The page names the maker only as Umbrel, with no legal form or address, so this listing does too. Umbrel sells hardware and software and holds none of your coins, so it is not a financial service.
The fact box says "open source: no" on purpose. The umbrelOS licence file says umbrelOS is licensed under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0, which lets you read and run the code for personal use but is not an open source licence as the OSI defines it.
A node at home does not change your tax duty. You still declare your coins at the ESTV year-end value in the wealth tax section of your return; the Swiss Bitcoin tax guide explains how. A node does change who sees your addresses: your wallet asks your own node, not a public server.
Who it is for
People who want their own Bitcoin node without the command line. The Umbrel Bitcoin Node app page says the app is powered by Bitcoin Core, and the Lightning Node app page says it is powered by LND, so you get the same software the node setup guide installs by hand.
Wallet users who want a private backend. Point Sparrow or Electrum at your own node instead of someone else's server.
Tinkerers with spare hardware. The umbrelOS GitHub page says umbrelOS installs for free on a Raspberry Pi 5 or an Intel or AMD machine with at least a dual-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a 32 GB drive, with 8 GB of RAM recommended.
Who it is not for
People who want an open source licence they can build a business on. PolyForm Noncommercial, per the licence file, rules out commercial use; Start9 and RaspiBlitz, both in the resource directory, are the alternatives to compare.
Anyone who only wants a wallet. A node needs power, a network cable and occasional updates; if you just want to hold bitcoin, start with the self-custody guide.
