Swiss angle
The BIPs are a global archive with no Swiss base. The bitcoin/bips repository, read on 5 October 2026, is run by a group of BIP Editors and names no company behind it. It is a collection of documents; it holds no coins and offers no account, so it is not a financial service.
We found no Swiss editor or office named on the repository's pages, so this listing claims none. The BIPs reach you in Switzerland through the wallets you use: when a wallet says it supports a BIP number, this repository defines that number.
The technical deep dive chapter explains the keys, scripts and transactions that most BIPs describe.
Who it is for
Developers who need the exact text behind a feature. Seed phrases are BIP39, which you can test with the Ian Coleman BIP39 tool. The derivation paths BIP-44, BIP-49, BIP-84 and BIP-86 decide which addresses a wallet finds after a restore, and our wallet recovery guide shows why that matters when coins seem to be missing.
People who want to propose a change. The README asks authors to "first describe their idea to the bitcoindev@googlegroups.com mailing list" and to open a pull request only once the draft is close to complete. It also says "Authors do not assign a number to their own proposal"; a BIP Editor assigns one and publishes the proposal by merging the pull request. The full rules are in BIP 3, which the README calls the "Updated BIP Process".
Readers who want to check a claim. When a product page says it supports a BIP, you can open that BIP and read what it requires. For a guided path through the same ideas, read Mastering Bitcoin.
Who it is not for
Anyone who reads a BIP number as a sign of approval. The README says that a published BIP "is in scope and has met other formal criteria for this repository, but does not indicate that it is a good idea, has community consensus, or that it is about to be adopted". What the network enforces is what nodes such as Bitcoin Core run, and the README says adoption rests with Bitcoin users.
Anyone looking for one licence. GitHub reports no licence for the repository as a whole, because each BIP states its own terms.
Anyone looking for an app. The BIPs are specifications with no software to install. Start with the wallet listings instead.
