Swiss angle
btcd is a global open source project with no Swiss base. The btcd repository, read on 5 October 2026, sits in the btcsuite GitHub organisation and names no company behind it. It is node software that you run yourself; it holds no coins and offers no account, so it is not a financial service.
None of the project's pages names a Swiss maintainer or office, so this listing claims none. The technical deep dive chapter explains what a full node checks and why that matters.
Who it is for
Go developers who want to validate blocks in their own language. The README calls btcd "an alternative full node bitcoin implementation written in Go (golang)" and says it has been in production use since October 2013. It downloads, validates and serves the block chain using the same rules as Bitcoin Core, consensus bugs included, and runs the official block acceptance tests on every pull request.
Lightning node operators who prefer a Go stack. The LND README lists btcd as one of the pluggable chain back ends for LND, next to bitcoind and neutrino. If you run LND, btcd is one of the nodes it can talk to.
People who check what they install. The README links to a reproducible build process for verifying releases. The latest release on GitHub is v0.26.2, published on 24 July 2026, and building from source needs Go 1.25 or newer. The licence is the copyfree ISC License.
Who it is not for
Anyone who wants to send or receive coins with the node alone. The README says btcd does not include wallet functionality "and this was a very intentional design decision", so btcd alone cannot make or receive a payment. That job belongs to the separate btcwallet project, or to one of the apps in our wallet listings.
Readers who want the reference implementation. The README itself says the project is in a Beta state. Our node listings start with Bitcoin Core, the software btcd measures its rules against.
