Swiss angle

Esplora comes from Blockstream. The Esplora repository, read on 4 October 2026, publishes it under the MIT licence and describes a block explorer web interface built on the esplora-electrs HTTP API. An explorer shows public blockchain data and never holds coins, so Esplora is not a financial service.

No Swiss partner or office stands behind it. Esplora is a global tool, and it works the same in Zurich as anywhere else: you paste a transaction ID or an address and read what the blockchain says about it. For the bigger picture of what an explorer reads, the technical deep dive chapter walks through blocks, transactions and addresses.

One point matters for privacy. Even on an explorer that promises no tracking, your lookups reach someone else's server; running your own copy keeps them at home.

Who it is for

Anyone who wants to check a payment without an account. The public instance, Blockstream Explorer, describes itself as an open source block explorer for Bitcoin, Testnet and Liquid that supports Tor and is tracking-free.

Node runners who want their own explorer. The repository offers a ready Docker image, blockstream/esplora, with run commands for mainnet, testnet, signet and Liquid, and says the pre-caching of popular address statistics is not necessary for personal use. The node setup guide covers the node it would sit on.

Developers who want a known API. The mempool.space FAQ says the backend behind mempool.space is a fork of Blockstream's Esplora, so code written against one explorer often carries over.

Readers in other languages. The repository says the interface is translated into 17 languages.

Who it is not for

Beginners who want a one-click app. The repository explains installation with Docker commands and gives no figures for disk space or memory, so you size the machine yourself.

People who want to watch fees and the queue of waiting transactions. That is what mempool.space is built for; its FAQ says it shows a node's mempool as projected blocks.

Anyone looking for a wallet. Esplora only reads the blockchain; to hold and send coins, start with the self-custody guide.
