Swiss angle

ord is a global open source project with no Swiss home. The ord repository, read on 5 October 2026, names raphjaph as the current lead maintainer and says Raph's work on ord is "entirely funded by donations". The Ordinal Theory Handbook links to Casey Rodarmor and Raph Japh on its front page. ord is software you run yourself; it holds no coins for you and offers no account, so it is not a financial service.

We found no Swiss maintainer or office named on the project's pages, so this listing claims none. If you live in Switzerland, the question ord does not answer is how the tax office treats the inscriptions you make or hold. Our post on Ordinals and Swiss tax covers that, and the bitcoin tax guide covers bitcoin in general. This page states no tax rule of its own.

Who it is for

People who want to see Ordinals from their own node. The README describes ord as "an index, block explorer, and command-line wallet". The handbook explains the idea behind it: ordinal theory gives each satoshi its own serial number, and "Individual satoshis can be inscribed with arbitrary content". The project runs a public copy of the explorer at ordinals.com.

Node runners who already keep Bitcoin Core. The README says ord "requires a synced bitcoind node with -txindex" to build its index of where each satoshi sits. If you do not run one yet, start with the Bitcoin Core listing.

Developers and tinkerers who want a free licence. The repository is under CC0 1.0, and the latest release, 0.29.0, came out on 5 August 2026.

If you are new to the topic, read Bitcoin Ordinals explained and the chapter on NFTs and tokens on Bitcoin first.

Who it is not for

Anyone who wants a polished, guaranteed tool. The README says ord "is experimental software with no warranty".

People who manage their wallet with Bitcoin Core's own commands. ord relies on Bitcoin Core for private keys and signing, and the README warns that "Bitcoin Core is not aware of inscriptions and does not perform sat control. Using bitcoin-cli commands and RPC calls with ord wallets may lead to loss of inscriptions."

Anyone planning to keep savings in the same wallet. The same README says ord "should not be used with wallets that contain a material amount of funds" and asks you to keep ordinal and cardinal wallets apart. For bitcoin you want to keep, use a separate wallet from the wallet listings.

Anyone hosting the explorer for others without a plan for web security. The README notes that the ord server explorer hosts untrusted HTML and JavaScript, which opens the door to cross-site scripting and spoofing attacks.
