Swiss angle
Shift Crypto AG makes the BitBox02. Its privacy policy, read on 4 October 2026, names the company as data controller at Soodmattenstrasse 4, 8134 Adliswil, in canton Zurich. Shift Crypto sells you a device and the software for it. It never holds your coins, so it is not a financial service.
The BitBox home page says the devices are designed and manufactured in Switzerland. The BitBox02 shop page, read on 5 October 2026, prices it at CHF 138.00 including 8.10% VAT, one price for both the Bitcoin-only and the Multi edition, and its banner promises shipping from the Swiss warehouse.
You can run the app in three national languages. The BitBoxApp page lists English, German, French and Italian among the app languages, and the home page offers human support in English, German, Italian and Spanish.
Swiss services build on it. Pocket Bitcoin appears under "Trusted by" on the BitBox home page, and the Pocket Bitcoin listing describes payouts going straight to a BitBox02.
You can read the code. The firmware release firmware/v9.27.1 (GitHub, 31 August 2026) and the BitBoxApp release v4.52.0 (GitHub, 15 September 2026) are both Apache-2.0.
The keys sit on your device, so no bank reports the balance for you. You declare the year-end value of the coins in the wealth tax section of your return; the Swiss Bitcoin tax guide covers the ESTV year-end rate.
Who it is for
Swiss residents moving savings off an exchange into a wallet they control. Backup uses the included microSD card, with the option to write down the recovery words, per the shop page. The cold storage setup guide walks through the steps.
People who want savings and small payments in one app. The home page says a Lightning wallet runs directly in the BitBoxApp, using the backup you already have.
Users of other software. The BitBoxApp page says the device also connects to Electrum, Specter and Sparrow.
Who it is not for
iPhone and iPad users. The shop page says the BitBox02 does not work on iPhone or iPad and points to the BitBox02 Nova instead.
Anyone who wants someone else to reset access for them. Lose the device and the backup together and nobody can recover the coins, which the self-custody guide explains. If you would rather a Swiss bank held the keys, look at the custodial options in the buying guide.
