BlueWallet is open source software. Its privacy policy, last edited in 2021 and read on 4 October 2026, names the provider only as "Bluewallet Services" with no legal form or seat. The GitHub repository is MIT licensed, and release 8.0.1 was published there on 21 July 2026. The keys stay on your phone. BlueWallet is not a financial service, and nobody holds coins for you.
You get francs and three national languages. The features page, read on 4 October 2026, says BlueWallet supports more than 30 currencies including CHF, so balances can show in francs. The app's language list on GitHub includes Deutsch, Français and Italiano.
Lightning needs your own node. The Lightning page says Lightning in BlueWallet connects to a node you run, through LNDhub, and that an on-chain refill needs 3 confirmations before the balance appears. Without a node, you use BlueWallet as an on-chain wallet. The home Lightning setup guide covers running one.
You hold the keys, so no bank sends you a statement. You enter the ESTV year-end value of your coins in the wealth tax section of your return; the Swiss Bitcoin tax guide explains it. Watch-only wallets, listed on the features page, let you check a cold storage balance on the phone at year end without the keys ever touching it.
Who it is for
Swiss residents who want a free phone wallet in their own language and balances in francs. The keys stay on their own device.
Hardware wallet owners who want a phone view. The features page supports PSBT hardware wallets after a watch-only import, names Coldcard support, and offers multisig vaults; the cold storage setup guide shows where a phone fits next to the device.
Node runners. The same page says you can plug in your own node through Electrum Personal Server, ElectrumX or Electrs.
Who it is not for
Windows and Linux desktop users. The download page says there is no official Windows or Linux build; the desktop app is macOS only.
People who want Lightning without running anything. BlueWallet needs your own LNDhub node for that, per the Lightning page, which also calls Lightning experimental and advises keeping amounts low.
Anyone who wants a named Swiss company to call. The privacy policy gives an email address and no seat; if that matters, compare the Swiss-made BitBox02.
