The Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV) in Bern publishes the price list. It is a federal authority, not a company or a financial service. The contact block on the ESTV cryptocurrency page gives the address Eigerstrasse 65, 3003 Bern.
The rule behind it is short. The same ESTV page says payment tokens fall under the cantonal wealth tax, and you declare them at their market value at the end of the tax period. A footnote adds that the ESTV publishes the tax values of the most common cryptocurrencies in the price list. If a coin has no current rate, the page says you declare the original purchase price, converted into Swiss francs.
For bitcoin, the ICTax rate list for 2025, read on 4 October 2026, shows 1 BTC at CHF 69,571.988489. That is the value on 31 December 2025, and a 2025 return uses it in every canton. Multiply your holding by it and you have the figure for the securities list. The same table also prices Ether, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash and XRP.
The ICTax site runs in German, French, Italian and English. The rate list takes a few seconds to load in the browser, so wait before you decide a coin is missing.
Who it is for
Anyone who holds bitcoin in their own wallet and files a Swiss return. No bank sends you a year-end statement, so you look the value up yourself. The Swiss Bitcoin tax guide explains the wealth tax side, and how to declare bitcoin on your Swiss tax return walks through the form line by line.
People who use a tax tool and want to check its output. Blockpit and Koinly both say they value holdings at the ESTV figure. Put one line of their report next to the list and confirm the two match.
Holders of a smaller coin the list leaves out. The footnote on the ESTV cryptocurrency page says you may then use the market value of a leading trading platform. Write down which platform you used and keep a screenshot of its year-end price.
Who it is not for
Traders who want to know whether their gains are taxed. The list tells you what a coin was worth on 31 December and nothing more. Whether your trading counts as self-employment is a separate test, and the ESTV cryptocurrency page says it depends on the type, volume and financing of the transactions.
Anyone looking for a live price. The ESTV fixes the tax value once a year, and it does not move with the market. To buy or sell, compare the options in how to buy bitcoin in Switzerland.
People who file next year's return early. The ESTV publishes the 2026 value after the year ends, so the 2025 figure above is the wrong number for 2026 holdings. Check the list again when you sit down to file.
